The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, or GATE, is an examination of national level. This examination is administered by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), along with the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs); and based on the result; students are offered admissions to Ph.D. and other post-graduation courses in Architecture and Engineering. This year, GATE was organized by IIT Roorkee. The syllabus and the format of GATE Exam mostly cover questions about the core subjects, with about 70% of the marks dedicated to this. However, 15% of the marks are set aside for general aptitude questions, and the rest for questions regarding engineering mathematics. The GATE is a computer based exam, of three hours duration. There are 65 questions in the exam and the total marks are 100. The GATE cutoff varies from institute to institute. While one may have a GATE cutoff of 60 marks, one may require at least 70.
