Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that affect movement and muscle tone or posture. It's caused by damage that occurs to the immature brain as it develops, most often before birth. Signs and symptoms appear during infancy or preschool years. In general, cerebral palsy causes impaired movement associated with abnormal reflexes, floppiness or rigidity of the limbs and trunk, abnormal posture, involuntary movements, unsteady walking, or some combination of these. People with cerebral palsy can have problems swallowing and commonly have eye muscle imbalance, in which the eyes don't focus on the same object. They also might have reduced range of motion at various joints of their bodies due to muscle stiffness. Statistics show that 3 in 1000 children born in India are affected by this condition. At CP Unit, ARH children affected with Cerebral palsy and other musculoskeletal disabilities are rehabilitated by specialist and a team of physiotherapist. The center is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment including Thera suits, first of its kind in India. Besides this, other facilities like hydrotherapy pool and other methods to improve motor control with physiotherapy exercises, Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) apparatus, Functional Electrical Stimulators (FES), body weight supported treadmill and cage suspension therapy. Gradually as the child gains motor control, the exercise are transformed into functional activities like playing, writing, eating etc. required to start leading an independent life. On an average of 30-35 children attend this program every day except Sundays. To ensure their safety they are picked up from select points and dropped back. So far, about 1000 children have been cured through ARH. The rehabilitation program takes anywhere between three to twelve months. Parents also get trained to continue the exercises at home. At the time of admission, the proposed treatment for the child is decided based on the condition of the child. The number of sessions of therapies a child may need is being determined at the time of admission and on the basis of the improvement achieved over a period of time, the treatment will either be continued as planned as may be altered if required.
